| http://collections.aucklandmuseum.com/ontology/core/researcherComments | As a presentation piece the object reflects a cultural practise of the period and the form of trowel and mallet was generally used to commemorate the laying of foundation stones. While the general form is common to several countries outside of New Zealand and we have other examples of this practise in our own and other collections, the use of greenstone and the incorporation of Maori carving and design motifs makes the piece a distinctly New Zealand piece. It is also of excellent quality and is far more elaborate than other examples in our collection. The set was created in the workshop of Auckland silversmith A Kohn Ltd, a firm dating back to the 1870s which remained in business until 1964. While we do not know currently who the actual maker was, it is possible that this may become known through additional Research. Note that the silver model of the museum - created at the same time, by the same firm, to commemorate the same event – was made by Charles D Cowan, and specific makers are known for other pieces from the A Kohn workshop. It is possible that H Gordon Coates had been invited to officiate at the foundation stone-laying ceremony prior to his appointment as Prime Minister. This would have been appropriate to his role as a sitting MP from an Auckland district electorate, and to his own military service, having been awarded the Military Cross and bar while serving with the Auckland Regiment during WW1. This would provide added significance to the use of Maori motifs and carving as Coates had been Minister of Native Affairs since 1921, and was an advocate for resolving land grievances and in promoting Maori arts and crafts (eg the 1926 Maori Arts and Crafts Act). |
