(7) -- Mr John P. Webster (Folder 21), former curator of Ewelme Cottage, Parnell, Auckland, donated one letter on or about 18 March 1981 [Acc. No. 81/20. See also Manuscript Collection Accession Register No. 3, entry 81/20]

Manuscript Collection Accession Register No. 1 also alludes to a letter from a J. Williamson, Domestic Chaplain, dated 11 February 1963. This letter was searched for in May, 2007, but was unable to be located either in the Library's correspondence records or those of the Registration Department.

The earliest accretions of this collection (Folders 1-13) were deposited (also described as a 'loan in perpetuity') in 1962-63 by the Anglican Diocese of Auckland, per Archdeacon A.E. Prebble and also the Right Reverend Eric A. Gowing, Bishop of Auckland (Gowing was credited with depositing Folders 7-13). The Library assigned this first accretion the accession number 63/3. [see also Annual Report of the Auckland Institute and Museum, 1962 - 1963, p. 22, and correspondence filed under 'Bishop of Auckland' held at MUS-2003-81]

(10) -- Volume 3 was transcribed from a notebook, together with other books and many letters, lent for copying by Bishop Selwyn's grandson, Reverend S.J. Selwyn, of Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. These were returned to him in 1930.

(1) -- Mrs Ruth M. Marshall (Folder 15), youngest daughter of Archdeacon B.T. Dudley, in 1952. [see letter from Museum Director to Mrs R. Marshall, dated 18 December 1952. MUS-2003-77, Library Correspondence "Mad-Nz", 1950 - 1986. Copy also held by Registration Department]

(6) -- Right Reverend G.R. Monteith (Folder 19, Items 1 - 3), 7 Cathedral Place, Auckland, on 5 May 1980 [Ref. MUS-2003-77]. These were placed on permanent loan with the Museum [Acc. No. 81/10]. It was Bishop Monteith's desire that the ownership of the letters be registered as belonging to 'The Provincial Secretary, Church of the Province of New Zealand.' The originals were uplifted and transferred to the Anglican Diocese Office in January, 1990. There is evidence that the originals were loaned for copying by Bishop Monteith in September, 1969, and accessioned as 69/35 under MS-575 (and subsequently transferred to this collection). Also under 69/35 was Selwyn's plan of Parnell and a collection of miscellaneous letters. These were assigned to MS-574 [Receipt No. 46. See also Manuscript Collection Accession Register No. 1, entry 69/35, pp. 122-23]. The plan appears to have been later transferred to this collection (Folder 20) either in 1969 or some years after.

The remainder of the Selwyn collection consists either of transcriptions of loaned material that was subsequently returned or of material of unknown provenance. Also, a number of transcriptions of Selwyn's letters were produced by the Museum Library during the 1960s and these are to be found interspersed throughout the collection.

With and Introduction and Notes' from a typescript (Volumes 4a and 4b) already held by the Museum Library. A run of 200 copies was produced and sold for 25/- each. Extracts from this work were used in Alison Drummond's 1960 publication entitled 'Married and Gone to New Zealand ' being extracts from the writings of women pioneers' [NZ Collection; Call No. DU411]. Further correspondence relating mostly to the publication of 'Reminiscences by Mrs. S.H. Selwyn, 1809 - 1867' by Enid Evans and the intended publication of Selwyn's letters is held at MUS-1997-2. The whereabouts of Selwyn's original 'Reminiscences' is unknown [Ref. Letter from Enid A. Evans, Librarian, to John H. Evans, dated 8 April 1963. Born in 1809, at Hampstead, England, George Augustus Selwyn, D.D., was the first Bishop of New Zealand. He was educated at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge, where he gained his MA in 1834. He was first ordained in 1833 and consecrated Bishop of New Zealand, at Lambeth Palace Chapel, in October, 1841.

Selwyn was 32 years old when he arrived in New Zealand in 1842 to take charge of the missionary church. His first headquarters were initially established at the Church Missionary Society station at Waimate North but were later removed to Auckland in 1844. Selwyn is remembered as the founder of St John's College, Auckland; for the constitution of the Church of the Province of New Zealand; and for the 'Selwyn style' of architecture characterized by many of the churches present in the Auckland region. Selwyn left New Zealand for England in 1868 after accepting the see of Lichfield. He remained there as Bishop of Lichfield until his death on 11 April 1878. [see also Limbrick, Warren E.
