When war broke out she made her own way to England and enlisted with QAIMNSR. In January 1915, within three days of enlisting, Nurse Greig was nursing in France - in time for the Battle of the Somme. While in England, and still during the war, she married Lieut. Stanley Austin Carr, Auckland Mounted Rifles, whom she had known before the war. Barbara's sister Elsie Greig also nursed during WW1, serving with the Australian Army Nursing Service.
