On 29 August 1914 NZ Army captured German Samoa without a shot being fired. In March 1915 the Samoan Advance Force was returned to NZ and was replaced by a Samoan Relief Force which continued to be stationed in Samoa for many years after the end of the war. There was no official badge for this force, but many soldiers wore an unofficial badge not unlike those worn by the Reinforcements sweetheart brooch, Samoa Expeditionary Relief Force, NZ Expeditionary Force, WW1 sterling silver and gold brooch based on unofficial badge of Samoa Expeditionary Force: three coconut palms inside frame of palm fronds surmounted by crown, initials NZ on frame, unit name on plinth & base scroll: SAMOA / EXPEDIT.
