During WW1 Gladwyn Connell, youngest son of John Aitken Connell, enlisted initially with the Auckland Regiment but was later posted to the NZ Army Pay Corps and served as a Staff Sergeant. He served for a total of 4 years 232 days and received an Honourable Discharge for disabilities being 'unfit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service' [certificate dated 30 April 1920]. Despite this he only received a war pension shortly before his death, aged 50 years, on 15th June 1933. At the time Gladwyn Connell was living at Devonport, Auckland. 1914-1915 Star, WW1 Medal awarded to 12/2669 Staff Sergeant Gladwyn Douglas Connell 1NZEF, Pay Corps. bronze four pointed star; 55mm width; ring suspender, with ribbon obverse: a four pointed star having the uppermost point replaced by a crown, two crossed swords, the points and handles of which protrude between the points of the star. In the centre on a scroll is the date ‘1914-15’; this is surrounded by an oak wreath, on the bottom of which is a ‘G’ which encloses a ‘V’. reverse: engraved "12/2669 S/Sgt GD Connell. NZEF" ribbon: grosgrain ribbon, 32mm wide, a watered ribbon of red merging into white which merges into blue. medal, campaign
