http://erlangen-crm.org/current/P3_has_note British War Medal 1914-20 ES 2485 Charles Anderson, Royal Naval Reserve, WW1 Served: WW1: minesweepers & troopships; WW2: home service. Scottish-born Charles Anderson served as an engineer with the Royal Naval Reserve during WW1. This included service on mine-layers and on troopships, including NZ Transports. He took his discharge in Aberdeen, circa 1919. By the following year Charles Anderson was based in New Zealand. He undertook further qualifications as Second-class Engine Driver for Stationary Engines; and worked as fireman on a number of coastal vessels. During the 1920s he served with the 1st Battalion Taranaki Regiment, being posted to the Reserve in 1927. Charles Anderson was living in Wanganui and was 52 years old when he signed up for war service in April 1941. He was discharged at his own request six months later in October 1941, but had served long enough to qualify for his War Medal 1939-1945 and his New Zealand War Service Medal.

The horse is trampling on an eagle shield and cross bones Around the edge are the dates, ‘1914’ and ‘1918’ inscribed on rim: 2485 E.S. C.ANDERSON. ENGN. R.N.R. ribbon: grosgrain ribbon, 32mm wide, orange band in centre, bordered with white, black and blue stripes. Scottish-born Charles ANDERSON enlisted as an engineer with the Royal Naval Reserve during WWI, commencing service on mine-layers and on troopships, including New Zealand transports, on the 27th September 1914. The British War Medal was a campaign medal of the British Empire, for service in World War I. The medal was approved in 1919, for issue to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who had rendered service between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Officers and men of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Dominion and Colonial naval forces (including reserves) were required to have completed 28 days mobilised service – the medal was automatically awarded in the event of death on active service before the completion of this period. ANDERSON received the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal 1914-1918. His rating at time of discharge was Engineman, and an identity certificate issued circa time of discharge is dated 11 June 1919, noting present branch of service as R.N.R.T. He was discharged in Aberdeen on the 11th June 1919. Post-WWI, ANDERSON based himself in New Zealand.
