David Stark Durie, Armed Police (Wellington) Medal gazetted in 1871; ref: 515; AD32/2699 David Stark Durie, of Scottish heritage, came to New Zealand from England in 1840 as a member of the New Zealand Company. He had previous military service with the Scottish Fusiliers in Portugal (1832) and in Spain (1835-1839) and had attained the rank of Major. In 1846 he was appointed by Sir George Grey to establish the Wellington Armed Police. At the time he was a captain in the New Zealand Militia. In New Zealand he also took up the post of Resident Magistrate and Customs Officer at Waikanae, and from 1851-68 at Wanganui. Durie Hill in Wanganui is named after him. Military Service: Rank: Major, Inspector; enlisted with Armed Police from Wanganui; also saw service in the British Army and served with Spanish Legion against Don Carlos in Portugal. NZ Service: Wellington Militia: Horokiwi Valley; capture of Te Rauparaha at Porirua (1846-1851); Officer Commanding Wellington Police District New Zealand Medal (undated) New Zealand Wars (1845-47 period) Medal awarded to Inspector David S Durie, Armed Police (Wellington), New Zealand Wars silver medal, fern frond suspender, with ribbon with buckle clasp brooch suspension bar obverse: diademed head of Queen Victoria with a veil covering the back of her head, around the head is the legend: VICTORIA D:G:BRITT:REG:F:D reverse: a wreath of laurel, NEW ZEALAND above, motto below: ‘VIRTUTIS HONOR ribbon: dark blue with red stripe down centre named on edge: INSPR.
