The Silver War Badge (1916-1922) originally intended as a token of recognition of service to be worn in public to indicate that the recipient had "done his duty" and had been honourably discharged from the Service (for reasons of age or physical infirmity arising from wounds of sickness caused by military service. The badge was soon adopted as a universal symbol of recognition amongst newly formed ex-servicemen associations. Waldo S Thompson served with Wellington Infantry Battalion, WW1 - served on Gallipoli, and was wounded during the August Offensive and evacuated back to NZ. His two sons, Onslow and Forrest Thompson both served with the RAF/RNZAF during WW2.
