There were approximately nine bearers in his unit and he was the only one to return. Frederick Reynolds was working up north as a gum digger near Waihopo, Northland, at the outbreak of war, and after his discharge took up fencing contracts at Tolaga Bay, and then went back to the gumfields. His daughter says "he walked off with a money belt full of sovereigns" and bought a farm near Kaitaia.
