Following his marriage to Elizabeth Magdalene the couple settled in Palmerston North, where James was associated with contracting businesses, and became a member of the Manawatu Mounted Rifles. He was renowned as a horsebreaker and during the Anglo Boer War worked with the Remount Division preparing mounts for overseas service. James Paterson won this shooting trophy in 1905 and his diary for 1907 includes details of Manawatu Mounted Rifles Drills, Shooting tournaments, Volunteers Camps etc ; as well as daily work details: splitting posts, fencing, shearing & crutching sheep, river protection, laying tramlines; with comments on the weather; and a summary of his accounts at the back, noting on one occasion, "Cash paid out - The Damned Lot". Moved to Auckland in 1910. Associated with contracting and livery and firms, and then took up position with Manukau County Council as road overseer and foreman. James and his wife Elizabeth had two sons. The eldest, also James George Paterson, served with the Auckland Infantry Battalion and was killed during the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915, aged 20 years. His second son, Anthony John Paterson enlisted aged 17 years and served with the 4th Howitzer Battery, New Zealand Field Artillery. James died in 1937 and was survived by his wife Elizabeth, three daughters and his younger son.
