Mr Trussell, a musician, was a member of the Tui Concert Party set up to entertain troops in the war zone. He included the gas alarm in his extensive "effects" kit and used it appropriately in the shows. The sound of this alarm is indeed startling. Back in New Zealand the alarm was used for effect in silent films for which my parents played for many years, and in various theatrical productions. It was specially useful for many different effects according to the action on film or stage. Mr Trussell taught music until 1981 in Wanganui, conducted at various times his own orchestra, the Civic orchestra and many stage shows. He kept in touch with many members of the wartime concert party for most of his life."
