Predicate Object 1935.58 Collection of Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, 1935.58, W0768.1, W0768.2 2015-07-22T00:00:00.000Z 1 2020-12-16T21:17:05.382Z 25 Hazard Two hand grenades, WW1 Presented by TJ Welch, who was probably the same person as 24/2117 Private Thomas James Welch (1884-1952), New Zealand Rifle Brigade, NZEF. Employed as a Postal Clerk in Wellington at the time of his enlistment Thomas Welch served on the Somme and at the Battle of Messines. After being wounded on 15 September 1916, he was evacuated to England. The following year he was wounded on 7th June 1917 during the Battle of Messines,. He was admitted to hospital suffering gas poisoning (shell) and shell-shock.On 1st February 1918 he embarked for New Zealand aboard the Thiti and was discharged as "no longer fit" for active service. Following his discharge Thomas Welch moved back to Auckland. During WW2 he served with the National Military reserve, and landed in Auckland on 1.12.1952. Two hand grenades, WW1 grenade, hand
