This type of reinforcement badge was worn by men who had specialist training in signalling or machine guns, and was used from the 21st Reinforcements to the end of the war.Australian-born Rowland Percy Towle was employed as a solicitor in Auckland at the time of his enlistment as 2nd Lieutenant. He left New Zealand on 12 June 1917 with the 27th Reinforcements Specialists Company, Machine-Gun Section on HMNZT Maunganui, destined for Plymouth, England. Markings on his identity tags "AIR" suggest that he may also have served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment. On his return to New Zealand he brought back a collection of souvenirs.
