Predicate Object 1946.175 Collection of Auckland War Memorial Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, N1225, W1055.3 2016-03-21T00:00:00.000Z 1 2019-10-25T03:36:35.035Z 1D 34 55 British War Medal 1914-20 WW1 Medal awarded to 13/2301 Pte Alfred J Bregmen, Auckland Mounted Rifles, WW1 Alfred Bregmen, son of Edward Bregmen of Rangiriri, enlisted with the Auckland Mounted Rifles but was later transferred to the 2nd Battalion Auckland Infantry Regiment at Moascar in March 1916. He left New Zealand with the 8th Reinforcements in November 1915. After 2 years 233 days overseas service (and 166 days in New Zealand) Alfred Bregmen was discharged on 31.12.1918, “no longer fit for service”. Alfred suffered from gas poisoning, initially experienced on 25 June 1917 during the later stages of the Battle of Messines. His gas poisoning was followed by measles and neuralgia, but it was the gas which had a lasting effect, and on his return to New Zealand he went before a Medical Board which reported that he would likely continue to suffer the effects for a minimum of 12 months. The horse is trampling on an eagle shield and cross bones symbolic of death; above the horse’s head is the sun, symbolic of victory. Around the edge are the dates, 1914 and 1918 ribbon: broad orange watered band down the centre, bordered with white, black and blue stripes medal engraved: 13/2301 / PTE. A.J.
