Maurice Dignan was working as a Station Hand at Taumata Station, Gisborne, at the time of his enlistment. He left New Zealand in November 1916, and in March the following year was posted "overseas", leaving Sling Camp to join the 1st Battalion Otago Regiment in the field. Three months later on 7th June 1917 during the Battle of Messines, he was killed inn action "in France or Belgium". Maurice Dignan's medals were sent to his father, Francis John Dignan, care of the Northern Club, Auckland. British War Medal 1914-20, WW1 Medal awarded to 32148 Private Maurice Dignan, 1st Battalion, Otago Regiment, NZEF. circular silver medal; plain, straight non-swivelling suspender; with ribbon obverse: coinage head of King George V with the legend GEORGIUS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP: reverse: naked figure of St. George on horseback facing right. The horse is trampling on an eagle shield and cross bones symbolic of death; above the horse’s head is the sun, symbolic of victory.
