Predicate Object Collection of Auckland War Memorial Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, N1892 2016-03-21T00:00:00.000Z 1 2021-06-30T20:00:46.777Z 3C 55 1914-15 Star, WW1 Awarded to 13/897 Tpr Charles Lynleigh Dawes, NZ Mounted Rifles, WW1 The son of Thomas and Louisa Dawes, of 5, King's View Rd., Mount Eden, Auckland, Charles Lynleigh Dawes embarked with the fourth draft of the Auckland Mounted Rifles which left for Suez on 17 April 1915, arriving on 25 May 1915. Following training in Suez, the unit went on to Gallipoli, and within weeks Dawes was killed in action during the second assault on Hill 60 which began on 27 August 1915. The following day he was reported missing. On Saturday, 11 December 1915, his identity disk was handed into the Auckland Mounted Rifles orderly room by a man who stated he removed it from a decayed body on Hill 60. Dawes had been killed on 28 August, 3 months previously ("Bloody Gallipoli: The New Zealanders' Story" p 224) August 1915 has been described as: "the month that was to see the Auckland Mounted Rifles and all other regiments of the attacking force from ANZAC cut down to mere handfuls of sick and exhausted men; the month of fate that was to see all the sacrifice of lives, all the imperishable valour, all the striving of naked quivering souls, reap nothing but fame" (C.
