Maurice Dignan was working as a Station Hand at Taumata Station, Gisborne, at the time of his enlistment. He left New Zealand in November 1916, and in March the following year was posted "overseas", leaving Sling Camp to join the 1st Battalion Otago Regiment in the field. Three months later on 7th June 1917 during the Battle of Messines, he was killed inn action "in France or Belgium". Maurice Dignan's medals were sent to his father, Francis John Dignan, care of the Northern Club, Auckland.
