He subsequently migrated to New Zealand and took up farming in Henderson, Auckland. During WW1 served with the 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment. He embarked with the 23rd Reinforcements and his total period of service was from 3 January 1917 to 2 August 1918.
