http://erlangen-crm.org/current/P3_has_note Victory Medal 1914-1919, WW1 Medal awarded to 45870 Private Douglas Henry Kirkland, Wellington Infantry Regiment, NZEF. Douglas Kirkland joined up in January 1917 and embarked with the 25th Reinforcements, (B Coy) on 26th April. On 5th September1917, after a period spent at Sling Camp Private Kirkland where he joined the 3rd Battalion Wellington Regiment (11th Taranaki Coy) on 20th September. Two week later on 4th October 1917 during the Battle of Broodseinde at Gravenstafel Spur near Ypres Douglas Kirkland received a sniper’s bullet wound to his left shoulder. The wound was severe and he was invalided back to England, and in early 1918 was classified as unfit and placed on the NZ roll for return to New Zealand. For some months following his return on 16th March 1918 Douglas Kirkland was an outpatient at Auckland Hospital. He received his final discharge on 8th November 1918 as “no longer physically fit for war service on account of wounds received in action”.
