http://erlangen-crm.org/current/P3_has_note Miniature Victory Medal, WW1 Medal worn by 41980 2nd Lt. Ferdinand Wilson Lang, MC, 2nd Battalion, Auckland Regiment, NZEF. Born in Auckland in 1893, and educated at Auckland University College, Ferdinand Wilson Lang was teaching at Auckland Grammar School at the time of his enlistment. He initially signed up in 1916 to join the 27th Reinforcements but ill-health and a hernia operation meant that he did not commence active service or receive his commission as 2nd Lieutenant until 1st February 1918. He embarked with the 34th Reinforcements on 8 February 1918 on the Ulimaroa (HMNZT 100) for service on the Western Front. Lang joined his regiment in the field on 20th September 1919. He received a Military Cross for action at Crevecoeur on 30 September 1918. In November he was granted leave to travel to the UK where he attended an investiture ceremony held at Buckingham Palace. He was subsequently part of the Army of Occupation that entered Germany. In September 1919 he took his discharge while in the UK having received an NZEF scholarship to study medicine at Edinburgh University.
