Predicate Object 1992.279 Collection of Auckland War Memorial Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, N2942 2016-03-21T00:00:00.000Z 1 2019-10-25T03:39:10.935Z 4E 55 Victory Medal 1914-19, WW1 Awarded to 11/1942 Pte Arthur C Nicol, Wellington Mounted Rifles, 1NZEF Reporter, Arthur Charles Nicol, single man, embarked with the Wellington Mounted Rifles on 13 November 1915. They sailed on the Tofua, Transport No. 36, and during the voyage produced ‘The Albatross’, which was claimed to be the first Diggers' newspaper to be edited, printed and published aboard a New Zealand troopship. Arthur Nicol was the printer. In March 1916, three months after landing at Suez Arthur Nicols was transferred to the New Zealand Field Ambulance and the following month embarked for France to serve on the Western Front. He transferred to 1st Battalion Wellington Regiment (17th Company) in April 1918, and later that year was reported wounded (gassed) on 18.9.1918 and was admitted to 2nd NZ General Hospital on 27.9.1918. He returned to NZ aboard the Oxfordshire, and was finally discharged on 2nd March 1919 as no longer physically fit for war service on account of illness contracted on active service (emphysema). He died in Auckland of illness on 7.8.1941.
