During WW1 the Iron Cross was reauthorised by Kaiser Wilhelm I and was a decoration of the Kingdom of Prussia. The letter W on the obverse side refers to Kaiser Wilhelm I, Germany's ruler during WW1. On the reverse the initials FW refer to King Frederick William III, who created the award in 1813.
