In 1845, the partnership was extended to include William Gibson, who remained in Scotland, and Robert Mitchell, who came to New Zealand. Mitchell was the junior partner in the Scottish firm Gibson and Mitchell. This was a ten-year agreement jokingly known as the 'Quadruple Alliance'.
